TV Shows - Babylon 5

Babylon 5 is an American science fiction television series created, produced and largely written by J. Michael Straczynski. The show centers on the Babylon 5 space station: a focal point for politics, diplomacy, and conflict in the late 2250s and early 2260s. With its prominent use of pre-planned story arcs, the series was often described as a "novel for television".

Fantastic show until post Shadow War. The tension was nearly all gone with the super powerful enemy being defeated. All the main characters were interestnig. G'Kar's character had a great plotline in particular. Small problems: 1. They Psycorp would be running all of Earth's government if they were as powerful as portrayed. They would trick you into thinking that they had taken the blue pill and were no longer psychic or they would make you serve them in whatever way they wished. 2. The Membari would be dreaded by Humans and others alike. The Humans would not have been like: Oh, hey yeah they were just going to genocide us because one of our rogue captains killed their great leader, but then their religious cast said that we were also Membari because of reincarnation so they let us live. La, de daa, look at the pretty hyperspace gate. -- Submitted By: (ExTVLover) on April 29, 2013, 2:51 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Season 1 was good, on par with DS9 season 1, but it was also essential for the set-up for the main 5 year story, it had a lot of subtle hints at h was coming. Season to was way better, and the story really started moving. Season 3 was wonderful, B5 at its best, deciding from Earth Alliance was fantastic. Season 4, although fantastic, felt rushed as they had to condense seasons 4&5 into one yet as they were given notice of cancellation. I loved it, bu it would ave been etter spread over its 2 intended seasons. Season 5 was commissioned last minute, at which point the fish was well and truly boned. It felt "tacked-on" and not properly thought out, the story had concluded so this wasa blatant afterthought, and some characters were bent as their plots had irrevocably forced their departure. Shame, still a great show though. -- Submitted By: (randomshat) on January 5, 2012, 8:18 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Everything after Season 4 was mediocre. This includes S5, and all the spinoffs. -- Submitted By: (Googalslosh) on April 4, 2011, 7:49 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote

One of the great things about the series is that it made interracial (space alien to human) personal-cultural-professional-government politics play out in detail while being interesting to watch. That is aside from being a groundbreaking science fiction series with (at the time) stunning computer graphic effects that helped pioneer their use in film and television. The basic plot lines of every character and culture were planned in advance years before production by the head writer/creator, and it showed throughout production without retroactive rewriting of the show in later seasons to fix inconsistencies ("ret-conning"). Not as "preachy" as Star Trek with it's morality, but still had a lot to say about natural tendencies of people and governments and the nature of good versus evil. Some of the acting (especially early on, I felt) was not that great. However, the depth and detail of the universe made it interesting despite some weak performances and budget costumes on occasion. Who would have thought that a politcal and personal debate between various aliens and human cultures in between space wars would be interesting television? -- Submitted By: (Evan227) on March 23, 2010, 2:34 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
i'm a big fan because: -this universe isn't so neat and clean and atheist as the startrek universe -a lot of writers nowadays claim 'they have the whole series planned out in advance', he was one of the first, and really the only show-runner i actually believe isn't lying through his teeth in that regard -no reset-button, people (human & alien) actually change. and after a civil war there is mutual distrust for many years. of course i also have some complaints: -everything important is happening to that small group of 20-odd people -creating (lasting) peace by force of arms? sorry, i just don't believe in that. -some magic/alien/religious mumbo-jumbo used as deus-ex-machine -- Submitted By: (selena) on January 20, 2010, 6:48 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
The greatest Science Fiction show ever. Of all the characters my favorite is G'kar. HIs development is so fun to watch over 5 seasons. Even minor characters are well developed. I love Neroon, and the eventual sacrifice he makes for his people. Yes I love Star Trek TOS, but I think B5 is probably the best. Some great stand alone episodes too. Believers, where Dr. Franklin has to make a choice about saving an alien child or respecting his parent's beliefs, is incredible. It won two Hugos, definitely well deserved. -- Submitted By: (travisf) on December 16, 2009, 9:38 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
J. Michael Straczynski said that he planned the entire story for Babylon out in the 80's. George Lucas has always said that about Star Wars but it's blatantly obvious that isn't true. I have to believe Straczynski though, especially considering he said he got about 80% of wanted to do done. Pretty much fits with what happened production wise -- Submitted By: (Xenoltih) on July 19, 2009, 7:27 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Season 5 was a kick in the ass because the networks jerked this around so the writers ended it for all intents and purposes with season 4, then renewed it for antoher season, so you can see that the fifth season doesnt fit in, except for the last episode which was made earlier to end the series, whenever it ended- too bad. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on March 17, 2009, 5:28 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
