TV Shows - Ren and Stimpy

The Ren and Stimpy Show is an American/Canadian animated television series created by Canadian animator John Kricfalusi. The series follows the adventures of the eponymous characters: Ren Hoek, a psychotic "asthma hound" chihuahua, and Stimpson J. Cat, a dimwitted manx cat. They wander around in nonsensical adventures in a style reminiscent of the Golden Age of American animation, especially the 1940s cartoons by Bob Clampett and Tex Avery.

Agreed with the Adult Party shows. It showed that, while John K was a smart guy, he needed a governor (in this case, Nickelodeon). -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on July 6, 2013, 11:36 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
God, this show was nasty and gave me serious nightmares when I snuck it during the tail-end of the series' original run back in the late 90's on Nickelodeon... After re-watching it some years later, it held up... They pulled it off, somehow, despite all the nastiness. Maybe it was the seriously dark humor and adult jokes they snuck in at times? Like the episodes where Stimpy clones Ren and Ren's "evil" clone tries to take over the world after ruining everyone's lives? "Hermit Ren"? Or that one where Stimpy meets Ren's cousin from Sweden and they destroy Ren's home, the latter literally threatening to kill them afterwards? Maybe it was because it proved Ren and Stimpy proved it could have emotional, serious episodes? Like the episode with Stimpy's "Son", his own fart, or the episode where Stimpy become addicted to TV and has real-life withdrawal symptoms when Ren takes it away? And the one were Stimpy questions his morality being on his final life out of 9. The later episodes made by Nickelodeon after John K. departed did not have the same magic that the originals had, but there were a couple good episodes, I just mentioned a few in that bundle of examples above along with some Spumco gems. I don't know. This obviously wasn't meant to be a kids' show, though. John K. should have waited a few years and pitched it to Comedy Central or Adult Swim on Cartoon Network or something. Then again, those "Adult Party Cartoon" episodes he made in the 00's were WAY too nasty for my taste, had no plot, and lacked that mysterious "cleverness" I can't put my finger on the original episodes had. They was just toilet humor... And that was it. I mean, for example, South Park is obnoxious, but it makes up for it by making fun of many aspects of society oh-so-gloriously and cleverly. -- Submitted By: (Crewman) on July 3, 2013, 2:50 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
"Stimpy's Cartoon Show", which introduced the "Wilbur Cobb" character was a pretty good post-John K episode, but for the most part seasons 1 and 2 were classic. Love the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen ep......and song! -- Submitted By: (ParkerTillman) on June 15, 2012, 3:48 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I know this show is often hailed as a '90s classic, but I never could stand it. It was just "zany" and gross-out humor, no wit to it at all. It started out around the same time The Simpsons did and really paled in comparison. I know people say Kricfalusi's firing as the boning point (and ironically his returning as well with "Adult Party"), but I never really noticed any drop in quality-- it was dumb before and dumb after. I know people like to blame Nickelodeon and Billy West for his firing, but what were they supposed to do? We all have deadlines in our jobs and Kricfalusi repeatedly and notoriously refused to meet his. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on January 30, 2011, 12:39 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I thought this was stupid and annoying. This whole realm of animated shows that deal with bodily functions and such just saled right by me. -- Submitted By: (lrbloom) on January 29, 2011, 11:21 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
This show was truly awesome, but I think it boned when John K left. :( -- Submitted By: (MorbidDuck) on June 20, 2010, 7:35 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Boned when Nickelodeon hi-jacked the show from Kricfalusi. The new show on Spike did not do them any favors sadly. -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on December 4, 2009, 1:25 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
This show sucked and I can't believe Nick would ever show such crap. The cartoons were ugly and they had gross plots! Worst show ever! -- Submitted By: (LauDor08) on November 9, 2009, 8:00 pm - (-1 votes) - Login to Vote
The first and second seasons of Ren and Stimpy had some lovely animation, music (mostly stock music from APM, KPM and Capitol Records) and had an almost Tex Avery, Bob Clampett or Chuck Jones feel to them. There was the occasional bathroom joke, but the interesting plots, music and animation made up for it. But, when the Third season came around, when John Kricfalusi (the creator) left, it wasn't as good. It still had the same feel of the first 2 seasons, and had several good episodes I can remember, but the animation got plainer and flatter, it relied more on jokes about butts and boogers, but it just wasn't the same. The Fourth and Fifth seasons just ended up being an endless string of toilets, blood and guts, vomit, and just downright nastiness. (They had the some good jokes, 50's references, political jokes, and the like in the final seasons, but It got so nasty and juvenile, just wasn't worth it anymore). The adult party episodes were just nasty. The animation took a turn for the worse (R&S didn't even resemble themselves), the amount of gross out jokes, and sexual humor made it get to the point were it was downright vulgar. God knows what John K. was thinking when he made these 10 years later. -- Submitted By: (Johnny_T._Bird) on July 6, 2009, 2:09 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
After John K. left the show just wasn't as good anymore but quite a few from seasons three and four had good episodes but season five had very few as it just involved very weird situations, then came the adult party cartoon episodes the first one Onward and Upward was awful nothing but poop, snot, and gay jokes, the second one Ren Seeks Help was an improvement it was very much like the earlier episodes except more vulgar and disgusting it took a look into Ren's past on why he's so psychotic my favorite part was the ending, then there's Firedogs 2 it was alright but the constipation scene was nasty, Naked Beach Frenzy was okay very old school feel to it except they wouldn't show topless scenes, Altruists was okay this one probably features the most abuse Stimpy takes from Ren in these episodes but they could've done without the log sawing gag and when Stimpy takes off his skin and talks to the headless son about being gay, Stimpy's Pregnant was another one I didn't like it was too stupid and disgusting. -- Submitted By: (comic_guy87) on May 28, 2009, 10:38 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Yeah, after John K left, the show was not as great... There was the occasional good episode, Like the one with Ren's Evil clone, The Lincoln Memorial episode, and the one where they are marooned on the island w/the Kahuna, but God ones like the Dinner Party and the Yaksmas episode... Why?? -- Why did they make all these bad episodes anyway? They should have just ended it or something instead of this.. Give me Robin Hoek, The crying Giant and Commander Ren & Cadet Stimpy... -- Submitted By: (Ken) on May 10, 2009, 12:18 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Though gross, it was fun to watch. Then it was cancelled. Then it was brought back for an adult audience. And it was not the Ren and Stimpy I remembered it to be. It sucked. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on May 9, 2009, 12:53 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
Alot of Ren and Stimpy was bad, but the first season when John K actually was on the show before Nick drove him off and destroyed it was just pure cartoon Genius, it was a one of kind old time hand drawn cartoon that was original and funny, but in the long run, that was only 25% of Ren and Stimpy, so most of it was bad, but don't throw the baby out with the fish bone water. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on May 3, 2009, 7:53 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
This disgusting show, along with Rugrats (featuring Angelica the sociopath) and Doug (with the whiny primary character) are what killed Nickelodeon. -- Submitted By: (MCS) on May 3, 2009, 6:59 pm - (-3 votes) - Login to Vote
Once Nickelodeon Screwed over John K. This show was just...awful. Nick thought they could just run the characters without him, but it was woeful without the brains behind Stimpson J. Cat and Ren Hoek- the First dozen or so episodes are still true classics. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on April 23, 2009, 2:54 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
