Websites - Facebook

Facebook is a free-access social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc.[1] Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. The website's name refers to the paper facebooks depicting members of a campus community that some US colleges and preparatory schools give to incoming students, faculty, and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus.

I've had the displeasure of not following a lot of good friends of mine. Because god forbid, they can't go a day without sharing like 10 - 15 images clogging the newsfeed. Images of cheesy observational and motivational messages. Images of more unfunny animals like cats. Images of obvious inspirational messages done in these stupid fonts and sound like greeting cards. I'm sick of seeing them. That's what Tumblr is for. People have grown so clingy to Facebook, they feel that it's the only source of communication. What happened to the idea of the e-mail and/or messaging client? I remember using that stuff regularly like MSN, Yahoo! and AIM. Now I'm just down to Skype and everybody is either stubborn to move out of their Facebook caves or just don't bother. I like the exclusivity of messengers and e-mail. Facebook just bloats the idea of socializing and with all of it's features shoved in like apps and games, it has completely overdone the simple method of reaching people - communication. -- Submitted By: () on May 21, 2015, 3:21 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Well, my friend is experiencing the ugly side of Facebook firsthand. One of her friends full-blown stabbed her in the back, betrayed her, and posted what happened, roles reversed. Luckily, her TRUE friends know who really is the culprit, and only his friends believe his cock and bull story. That's not to say EVERY user will experience this kind of drama, but it's one reason why so many people are averse to joining the site. Myself included. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on May 4, 2015, 9:49 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Well, Facebook has now incorporated hashtags on their sites (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/06/facebook-introduces-hashtags/). That's right, Facebook is copying Twitter. -- Submitted By: (cartooner) on June 14, 2013, 11:18 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Robert, it is exactly as you suspect with her. Anyways, I've changed my outlook on FB. Now I'm just going to try and laugh when I see the crazy problems my Facebook friends have and be glad I'm not them. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on October 10, 2012, 5:59 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Travoltron, Please explain to me [Facebook phobe that I am] how it technically is easier to sign up to Facebook and 'friend' these other folks than to simply type a few e-mail addresses on an address line? And is said 'ease' truly worth the risks of lifelong headaches and problems resulting from getting mixed up with Facebook? -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on October 8, 2012, 8:01 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
In regards to the 30-ish Grandma: If she's younger than 36, then at least one of them was underage when they got pregant. Not something to be proud of, and definitely not something to shout from the mountaintops. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on October 7, 2012, 11:39 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
You have a good point, Pelirojo. I never play any of the games. I use it mostly because I am lazy and it's easier to correspond with people this way than by emailing everyone individually. I have a friend that is dead-set against Facebook whose new employer suddenly required all employees to join Facebook and friend the company! He refused and no longer works there. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on September 27, 2012, 1:22 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Travoltron, How about just 'defriending' the whole Facebook thing, then you wouldn't have to let these teapot tempest deals get you down! If other folks want to post incriminating stuff online for the whole world [including prospective future employers] to see online, that's THEIR deal but you don't have to participate and there are better things to do with one's time than a 'Farmville' game! -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on September 25, 2012, 9:34 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
A new horrifying event has occurred on Facebook for me. A school classmate of mine, now in her mid-thirties, has announced (proudly) that she is to be a grandmother. That depressed me for a couple of days, and just when I'm about to forget about it, she starts posting about it again. I may have to defriend this person for my own sanity. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on September 21, 2012, 7:17 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I agree with the sentiments that people shouldn't add / accept "friends" they don't actually know. I had a relative delete his account because he believed it was being hacked. I immediately thought "then why did you accept all those friend requests from people I swore under oath we never knew in school and didn't even GO to school with us?" It was easier for him to just delete his account than play closer to his vest. So while I agree with the sentiment, I don't think it makes facebook seem dumb. I think it makes people seem lacking in common sense. I fell into the "trap" with two FRs myself. When I realized that "experience" wasn't enriching, I dropped those two and made it a policy NEVER to accept an FR from someone who wasn't at least a confirmable friend of a friend. For me it's never boned, and whether it ever does is down to the individual user, not "it", unless the design changes are really an issue for you. -- Submitted By: (ParkerTillman) on July 31, 2012, 3:37 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
New type of Facebook poster? What do you call people that constantly post crap like this? http://tinyurl.com/wonkagod It's like an unfunny spinoff of LOLcats where passive-aggressives can dish out political jabs under the guise of "humor". -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on May 9, 2012, 1:09 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
What about the issue that Zuckerburg basically stole the idea from two guys that came up with the idea for a social website-then pushed his two partners out of business-I think that history will prove what a jerk Mark Zuckerburg really is-I think I am about to close my FB account and move over to Google+! -- Submitted By: () on February 2, 2012, 4:55 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Facebook is really BTF making this new 'Timeline' mandatory. It should be optional. Zuckerberg & Co. must be trying to see how much they can raise the bar on privacy invasion. -- Submitted By: () on January 25, 2012, 11:49 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
PREACH IT LRBLOOM!!! *Everybody* I know with a Facebook account has hundreds of friends, and have told me they either don't even like most of the people on their lists, or in some cases had no idea certain people were even on the list to begin with! How pathetic is it that people feel the need to literally accept anyone just to build their friend count because God forbid they should look like some "loser" and only have their actual friends on there. Just another way all of America has become one giant high school. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on November 8, 2011, 9:43 am - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
Does it cost anything to join FB haters? Day after day I look at this list of "friends" who were so intent that we add each other to our lists on FB yet never even say so much as "hello" or "fuck you" and that I get the message that the person who doesn't speak to you has invited you to pay $20.00 see their band play in Bumfuck, Ca next week. Social networking my ass!!! -- Submitted By: (lrbloom) on November 8, 2011, 2:05 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote

DolFan, Take heart! As long as there is a breath in me, you will NOT be 'the last Facebook hater on the planet'.Oh, and my mother told me that some cousins have gotten into it so I know how disillusioning it is to find out that some pod people are related! Yeesh! I've already covered why I dislike it and have no interest in joining the cult. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on October 5, 2011, 3:05 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
As possibly the last Facebook hater on the planet, I shouldn't have been surprised to find out that my friends and sister who are on it have Facebook friends they literally have no clue about. Apparently it's possible to have over 300 Facebook friends without actually caring about them or even realizing their existence. Who knew??? Makes Facebook seem even dumber to me! -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on October 4, 2011, 4:50 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I think everybody that does use it has their own reasons but it seems to me that bands advertising gigs is atleast logical. The only thing I dislike is the number of people who seem to be online all the time but can never have time to chat. Also, the latest thing on FB is using the names of famous people or television characters as usernames. I have atleast two Fairuza Balks on my friend list and I can't count the number of people using the names of the Dallas Ewings. I stopped adding when I got friend requests from Carringtons. Dynasty was a Dallas rip off anyway. -- Submitted By: (lrbloom) on October 5, 2011, 11:50 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
