Websites - JumptheShark.com

A defining moment when you know that your favorite television program has reached its peak. That instant that you know from now on...it's all downhill. Some call it the climax. We call it "Jumping the Shark." From that moment on, the program will simply never be the same. he term "jump the shark" was coined by site founder Jon Hein's college roommate of 4 years, Sean J. Connolly, in Ann Arbor, Michigan back in 1985. This web site, book, film, and all other material surrounding shark jumping, are hereby dedicated to "the Colonel." The aforementioned expression refers to the telltale sign of the demise of Happy Days, our favorite example, when Fonzie actually "jumped the shark." The rest is history. Jumping the shark applies not only to TV, but also music, film, even everyday life. We invite you to comment when any show jumped the shark.

I believe they call it the Scottish Site as a reference to referring to Macbeth as the Scottish Play because it's considered bad luck to refer to said play by name. -- Submitted By: (ExplodingConsole) on September 25, 2010, 9:51 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
I don't know what "Scottish Site" means, but I do remember Jumptheshark back in the day. I wasn't a frequent visitor, but I could always count on being entertained by the user comments. I remember crying with laughter while reading 48 pages worth of commentary on "Little House on the Prairie." Why on earth did TV Guide buy it only to kill it? It's not as if they were competing products. I wish I had printed out more content before all that good stuff was destroyed. Shame on all parties involved. It was the users who made JTS such a great site in the first place! -- Submitted By: (mudpuppy) on September 25, 2010, 10:55 am - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
This is a prime example of what happens when a great idea gets into the hands of people who think they know better how to improve on said greatness. Too bad! I really liked the old site with it's laid-back style, and left many a comment there over the years. It's a crying shame that the Borg of entertainment (TV Guide) bought the rights to the site, reconstructing (and resurrecting) the new one in it's own image. The result: a VASTLY inferior product in spite of the best of intentions. May the old site rest in peace! -- Submitted By: (Chuck) on September 25, 2010, 12:08 am - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
I took at look at the "Scottish Site" this week- and man, it is just embarrassing at this point. The last update was like 7 months ago. Sad, Sad, Sad. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on September 6, 2010, 2:51 pm - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
You used to work for JTS? That's cool! BTF should make a Stump the Shark analogue someday. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on September 6, 2010, 11:08 am - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
I worked on the website for jts, first just as a commenter but then I started handling the "Stump the Shark" questions before all of the websites about television and wikipedia existed, and that earned me a chance to be a moderator for the site's ancillary newsgroup (that, surprisingly, actually still exists - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jumptheshark/ ) Reading through that group's message board is a little bit like the old site, and I see that some of the BTF people have been active there as well. Obviously, the problem was TV Guide was completely clueless about how to make the site work for them. Why they didn't consult with Hein about it is a mystery, but then again, TV Guide (who had the market cornered on presenting television facts and giving the listings for FOREVER) lost its way with that as well. I submitted an article to them about 30 Rock being the new Mary Tyler Moore a year into that show's run... I consider it a badge of honor that they rejected it! CLUELESS! -- Submitted By: (TheDeanofNYC) on September 4, 2010, 10:07 am - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
Jump the Shark boned when TV Guide took it over and made it into a blog site. It used to be one of the best sites on the internet, but after TV Guide took it over, it become some awful blog site that I never look at. Bone the Fish is a great alternative to Jump the Shark, and I'm glad somebody revived the idea of the original site. -- Submitted By: (Lugia2453) on July 28, 2010, 7:52 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
I'll never forgive TV Guide for killing Jump the Shark. -- Submitted By: (cartooner) on July 9, 2010, 10:59 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Wow now updates on the Scottish site since February? What a disgrace, pour some Slaw and Vinegar out for these folks!! -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on June 30, 2010, 6:43 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I hate the new TV Guide JTS site. I can't even find anything now! -- Submitted By: (MorbidDuck) on June 20, 2010, 7:52 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Yes, when it moved to TV Guide without a doubt. JumptheShark was one of the most fun sites to visit just to past time when you were bored since there was always a certainty of updates each day. Now, yes. It sucks. -- Submitted By: (johnnydough) on May 4, 2010, 9:11 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Wow, I forgot about that book! Thanks for reminding me! I've always wanted that book (circa 2003, nevertheless) but around the time of the redesign I had forgotten about it! Hopefully there will be a "Bone the Fish" book that talks about how the Scottish Site was destroyed, how the fans boycotted the Scottish Rag and Scottish Sellout, and how BTF came into being! The new book could also include the best of the best comments, too! Now, did I miss something else? Oh yeah, Jon Hein stinks. Good day! -- Submitted By: (SVN) on March 11, 2010, 2:41 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
After the Scottish Sellout's repeated dodging of JTS-related questions and total disrespect of JTS fans, my copy of the "JTS" book is going into the "Sell to Used Bookstore" pile. Hein no longer deserves any of my shelf space. Hmmph! -- Submitted By: (Mythigator) on March 9, 2010, 12:43 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Well, at least we now have closure on what the Scottish sellout thinks of his old site being raped. And the decidedly low amount of respect for his fans. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on March 8, 2010, 10:02 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I have no problem with Howard bringing it up whenever, it isnt an import detail to the show. Jon Hein was the one that just brushed it under the rug, and brushed it off as opposed to saying "Yeah it really sucked". That's why Jon Hein has Boned the Fish permanently. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on March 8, 2010, 6:19 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I would cut Howard some slack for waiting so long to ask Hein that. His life does not revolve around every little thing that might be important or interesting to one of us. Jon Hein however, dodging that question like that like a champion boxer... I might get that he really has nothing much to say about it, but to say it like that... I really don't know what to say. -- Submitted By: (PYLrulz) on March 8, 2010, 5:08 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
FYI- Howard Stern asked Jon Hein about the current state of JTS this week, and he meekly said they changed it, and wouldnt say that it went downhill, he quickly evaded, and said it wasnt his ediotrial control anymore and that it got folded into TV guide, when Howard asked about why they would just change the site, he again brushed it off.... here is the transcription from Mark's Friggin Howard Stern website... Jon Hein- you keep on boning the fish buddy!....................TRANSCRIPT....... Jon Hein came in with his Wrap Up Show preview. Howard said Jon is also the host of The Bonus Show on Howard TV. He said he had some new stuff he wants to throw to the new show. Jon ran down his list of subjects for today's Wrap Up Show. Howard and Jon talked about Mr. Skin wanting to get 20 million for his web site. Jon said that he could probably get 10 million no problem. That led to them talking to Jon about his web site JumpTheShark.com which was absorbed by TV Guide. Jon said that they've kind of lost their identity now because it brings you right into the TV Guide site. Howard said that TV Guide used to be a listing of the TV show listings and they were doing great for years. Then they died when the internet had everything available. Howard asked if he can go on Google and type in ''what's on TV tonight'' and get a list. Jon said that there are ton of sites that have that kind of information so it would probably work. Robin told Howard that he could use his TiVo. Howard said he hates using that guide. It's too hard for him to figure out to see what's on that night. Robin asked Jon if they ask him to do anything with his web site anymore. Jon said that they do once in a while and he's willing to do it but he really doesn't have much control over it now. Jon ran down the rest of the show preview and they ended up talking about the Roger Ebert stuff they were playing this morning. Howard said he had some more of the clips that Sal and Richard made up using a computer voice. " -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on March 7, 2010, 4:14 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Yes I have the account 'jumpedthesharkcommenttaker' and used it last year to get some comments but don't remember the account settings or the email I used for it. If someone emails me the email address of that account I will know the password. Thanks! -- Submitted By: (kitchenbreak) on February 7, 2010, 10:46 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Yeah! Could we start with the "Nickelodeon" page, please? (Please remember to score out some of the words on there; these messages were from the early days of the Scottish Site and no rules were made until the Scottish Rag [TV Guide] assumed control.) -- Submitted By: (SVN) on February 6, 2010, 2:53 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
My suggestions would be to start copying and pasting comments and reasons over to this site! -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on February 6, 2010, 6:46 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
