TV Shows - Freaky Links

Derek Barnes, a goofy but likable 19-year old, mourns the disappearance and apparent death of his big brother Adam, a paranormal researcher. Derek puts up a very amateurish web site, freakylinks.com, to try to find out what happened to his brother. Ethan Embry starred as Derek and Dennis Christopher played the mysterious Vince Elsing. Fox put up an actual website called freakylinks.com several months before the show's debut and it became popular. It later became an embarrassment when it was discovered the site was phony and was just a promotion for the show. It was cancelled during its first and only season with 19 episodes made.

1 I remember this show and how stupid Fox TV thought we all were, this was around the same time as the "real" alien autopsy fiasco! It wasn't a bad show at all and would have maybe been a hit but too many people were pissed off that the website turned out to be fake and the way Fox tried to pretend it and then the TV show were all real. Ethan Embry was perfect as the dumb ass Derek, you wanted to believe in him just because he was so naive and helpless. -- Submitted By: (jmac9909) on December 23, 2014, 1:15 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
2 This was the year 2000 and every high school and college kid in the country was scouring the web for unusual and creepy sites. A friend told me about freakylinks.com and I was intrigued. It looked crappy as hell, like some kid did it, but it told a great story about this guy searching through the paranormal world for his brother's killer. NOWHERE did it say it wasn't real or operated by Fox. Several months after the site became popular, Fox launched the TV show. At first they claimed it was a realty-type show featuring Derek Barnes. When millions of kids recognized Derek as being Ethan Embry (Mark from the teen-cult hit Empire Records) Fox said it was BASED on the real Derek Barnes. When it came out there IS NO Derek Barnes, Fox quickly cancelled the show and never spoke of it again. Pretty scummy, Fox! -- Submitted By: (martymarty) on December 10, 2014, 4:12 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
3 When this show was on the air I was still young enough to think it might be real. After all the freakylinks.com website was real, right? And this Derek kid, real dude living somewhere in Florida, right? I was devastated when I learned that it was all fake, I even tried to send Derek money to help his investigation. I hope the Fox exec responsible for this burns in hell. -- Submitted By: (spacer) on December 9, 2014, 8:36 am - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
