TV Shows - Howdy Doody

Howdy Doody was a children's TV show created by Buffalo Bob Smith that aired from 1947 until 1960. Howdy Doody originated as a voice during Smith's days as a radio announcer on WNBC (AM). When he made an appearance on Puppet Playhouse on December 27, 1947, the reception was enough for a character to be created. The puppet was created by Frank Paris, a puppeteer. As Howdy Doody's popularity increased, demand for merchandise increased. There were monetary disagreements between Paris and Smith, and in anger, Paris took the puppet and left NBC studios four hours before the live recording, thus leaving the show without its star. The impromptu response was that Howdy Doody was on the campaign trail, and there was even a map where viewers could help Smith find him. Another puppet was created, and the excuse was while on the trail, Howdy Doody had plastic surgery done on him. He was a red-headed puppet with 48 freckles, one for each of the United States (Until 1959, when Alaska was added to the union).
