DolFan, I hope that you didn't give any over-the-hill actress any ideas! The sad part is: you're right; it's just a matter of time before this happens (God save us)! -- Submitted By: (jimdcarter) on December 10, 2012, 10:30 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
As long as she doesn't come out with a swimsuit/nude calendar (and you just KNOW one day a woman over 70 will do this) than I'll be able to maintain what's left of my sanity. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on June 5, 2012, 7:14 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Betty's always been kind of rowdy, just harken back to her appearances on Match Game and Hollywood Squares. I think her recent popularity came after that Super Bowl commercial she did. I've always liked her, but I agree she has become a bit overexposed. -- Submitted By: () on June 4, 2012, 12:58 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Still doesn't make it right, Travoltron. Still doesn't make it right. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on August 30, 2011, 7:29 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
These kind of roles may be the only kind of starring roles women of their age are offered. Hollywood has been having elderly characters spew "hip" dialogue for quite a while now. 6 Oh don't get me wrong, I've never watched HIC either. Just watching the ads for it are horrifying enough. You've got our venerable Betty spouting such tripe as, "When you see a cutie, you've gotta tap that booty!" Seriously?!?! Was she saying stuff like that 40-50 years ago? I think not! And again, she's being paid good money to say this. At least, I *hope* that's the only reason she acts that way. Her and Chloris Leachman are by far the two worst offenders when it comes to women over 75 acting like high school hos. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on August 26, 2011, 8:54 pm - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
I hear what you're saying Dolfan, but you must understand I have a rather dark and almost inconsistently off-the-wall sense of humor (and it even sometimes borders on the juvenile, :)) -Honestly, I can't really comment on 'Hot In Cleveland' because I just don't watch it. Basically, because I think the whole premise of the show seems to be built around 'Betty White being raunchy' and for me, that would get old really fast. Amending what I said earlier, the whole bit was "funny and refreshing" WHEN it was sudden and new particularly when she did it on SNL (and I don't want to hear about how much "SNL sucks now..." I know, I know that's another subject altogether) because it was so - in a word- unexpected (I mean, that's what makes the punchline of a joke so funny, it's typically unexpected). However, I would say that at this point the 'joke' has gotten a bit stale now, and now that Betty white has gone in that unexpected direction, had her fun and infused her career with new life- perhaps she should cool it a little with the Jr. High humor and use her talents (and new found fame) to focus on more worthy efforts. -- Submitted By: (Friedrich_Feuerstein) on August 26, 2011, 10:57 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I have never found people over 40 acting like they're back in junior high to be "refreshing". With age should come wisdom. It's pathetic that people over 40 now feel they absolutely *must* act that way in order to have any fun at all. I feel very strongly about this. Plus, you know she's getting paid good money to spout that inane drivel on Hot In Cleveland, right? -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on August 25, 2011, 6:32 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
I think the appeal of Betty White at this point in her career is the fact that she's sort of this living contradiction. She has all the outward appearances and mannerisms of a sweet grandmotherly type lady and then- BOOM- we get blindsided by her when she busts out a raunchy joke. It does seem to be reaching the boning point. For awhile, I had to admit that it was refreshing and amusing to see a lady her age cutting loose and having some no-holds-barred fun with the third act of her career. But this whole Betty White mania is beginning to get a wee bit old now. -- Submitted By: (Friedrich_Feuerstein) on August 25, 2011, 10:07 am - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
Meh. Why should being the last living Golden Girl be anything special? Only in today's America would someone actually get praised for that. I don;t care who she's the last of, I just want her off my TV before she cracks any more 7th grade jokes. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on August 23, 2011, 6:55 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
I always thought she was more fun as Mary Richard's nemesis Sue-Ann Nivens than as daffy Golden Girl Rose! Still, I'm glad to see she's steadily working even though few if any of her contemporaries in the industry are employed. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on August 23, 2011, 1:18 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
Jp, I think that her recent surge in popularity is because she's the last living Golden Girl (not that I'm bothered by that or anything). -- Submitted By: (cartooner) on August 22, 2011, 4:52 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I don't have any issues with Betty White. But, what I don't understand is why she's blown up in popularity. Is it because she the last Golden Girl. Does she share a similar admiration likened to George Burns? What is it exactly that keeps her in the limelight. I don't have any problems with her working, that's her choice. I just don't understand her infamy is all. -- Submitted By: (Jp) on August 21, 2011, 7:03 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
