Batman is a comic book character created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. He first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939, and has been one of the most well-known of DC's characters. His secret identity is Bruce Wayne, an American millionaire playboy who, as a child, witnessed the murders of his parents. This inspires him to swear revenge against crime. Other characters include his butler Alfred Pennyworth, his ward Robin, police commissioner Jim Gordon, and Batgirl. Batman faces several villains, including The Joker, The Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face, and Poison Ivy.
