Random Topics - Hollywood

Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California, United States situated west-northwest of downtown Los Angeles.[2] Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie studios and movie stars, the word Hollywood is often used as a metonym of American cinema. Today, much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as the Westside neighborhood,[3] but significant auxiliary industries, such as editing, effects, props, post-production, and lighting companies remain in Hollywood, as does the backlot of Paramount Pictures.

For me Hollywood movies boned when everyone (including the bad guys) stopped smoking and became obsessed with health & safety, but actually thats just the tip of the iceberg. It seems to have begun with the "gritty realism" style, when movies started mimicking the esthetics (or rather lack of such) from newscasts and reality shows. Dreary visuals with shakycam, flat lighting and washed-out colors, dull suburban/modern locations, and young, pretty and utterly bland characters. Then there is the focus on PG ratings combined with most movies being remakes/reboots, making pretty much everything look like sanitized versions of much better stuff made decades ago. Even many R-rated films feels like PG, they seem to just add a few swear words or a single violent scene which later easily can be cut for TV or airline showing. While Hollywood always has been about money, it has just became so blatantly obvious lately that its no longer possible to suspend disbelief. As the studios has merged into ever-larger companies originality and artistic integrity has gone down the drain and been replaced by design-by-committee, political correctness and targeting the widest possible audience. -- Submitted By: (Axel) on April 18, 2017, 9:43 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I've been to Hollywood recently and there really isn't much to see other than the walk of fame and the foot prints. I find that Broadway in New York is way more exciting and a better place to spot celebrities. -- Submitted By: (JayD) on July 24, 2011, 7:19 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Here's another quote about Hollywood from Johnny Depp, "It's good to experience Hollywood in short bursts, I guess. Little snippets. I don't think I can handle being here all the time, it's pretty nutty." -- Submitted By: (SSM) on July 20, 2011, 3:34 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
When a town has more HIV clincs and Scientology centers than it does schools or churches, you know it boned the fish. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on July 17, 2011, 5:01 pm - (7 votes) - Login to Vote
Hollywood BTF'ed when they went from being a magical place where movies are made to becoming the cesspool they are now. Gone are the golden days when Hollywood was associated with classics such as The Wizard of Oz. Today, Hollywood is synonymous with sleaze and filth. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on July 17, 2011, 12:50 pm - (4 votes) - Login to Vote
I don't mind independent movies being made no matter what the label, I just don't understand why Hollywood can't just make the movies under their own labels. Why do they need these faux "independent" labels? -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on July 15, 2011, 6:09 pm - (4 votes) - Login to Vote
Hollywood has always had a love/hate relationship with me. With that said, it's really hard to pinpoint the times when they've boned and unboned. -- Submitted By: (cartooner) on July 15, 2011, 5:47 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
One problem I had with Hollywood was when the whole concept of Independent films became very popular. There were people out there thumbing their nose at the establishment scraping together scant funding saying "Oh yeah, well I'll make my film anyway you jerks!" Bang! A few of these become major hits then the next thing you know, you're seeing all these films billed as "Independent" films (of course with multi-million dollar budgets). Boooo. -- Submitted By: (Friedrich_Feuerstein) on July 15, 2011, 1:53 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
And to quote another celeb with a very realistic POV about Hollywood- Martin Mull once said "Hollywood is like High School- with money." Having dipped myself in that vat for a relatively brief portion of my life I'd have to say I agree with that assesment completely. -- Submitted By: (Friedrich_Feuerstein) on July 15, 2011, 9:32 am - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
kingbk, I don't disagree with Mr. Cusack but I believe Marilyn Monroe summed it up best when she said "Hollywood is a place where they pay you a $1000 for a kiss- and 50 cents for your soul!" -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on July 15, 2011, 8:49 am - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
I think John Cusack said it best when he said Hollywood is what's wrong with being an actor today. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on July 15, 2011, 2:13 am - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
WOOHOO!!! FFs new topic got approved!!! I'm not sure I can even pinpoint a single BTF moment for Hollywood though since it's just that horrible and always has been really. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on July 14, 2011, 7:22 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
