Killer Instinct, aka KI, is a fighting game created by Rare and published by Midway and Nintendo. It was released as an arcade game in 1994, and has also been ported to the Super Nintendo and Game Boy. In the game, an evil corporation known as Ultratech is planning to take over the world. They host a fighting tournament known as Killer Instinct. The fighters (and their goals) in this tournament are B. Orchid (to get information on Ultratech which she can give to her organization), Jago (a monk who wishes to please his tiger god), Fulgore (a robot built by Ultratech to help them attain their goal of world domination), Sabrewulf (who wants a cure for his lycanthropy), Spinal (an ancient skeleton given life through Ultratech's experimentation), T.J. Combo (who fights for money), Cinder (a convict who was experimented upon and fights for an early release from prison if he is victorious), Riptor (Ultratech's genetic experiment which combines the ferocity of a dinosaur with the intelligence of a human), Glacius (an alien who crash-landed on Earth and is forced by Ultratech to fight for his freedom), and Chief Thunder (who wishes to find out what happened to his brother in the previous Killer Instinct tournament). The final boss was a two-headed monster named Eyedol. Each character has their set of special moves, a humiliation move (in which the near-defeated opponent can be made to dance for the winning player's amusement), and a set of "No Mercy" moves, where the victor can kill his weakened opponent. The game also made use of the combo system in which successive hits could be made, linked by special moves. Its popularity led to a sequel, Killer Instinct 2. It was ported to the N64, under the title Killer Instinct Gold. After Orchid defeats Eyedol, a portal is opened, and the surviving fighters are transported 2,000 years into the past. Meanwhile, the demon Gargos is freed from limbo in the process. The sequel introduced more fighters: Maya (an Amazon woman who was banished by her people when Gargos returned, and fights to regain her place), Tusk (a barbarian who wants to fight the challengers so he can battle Gargos), and Kim Wu (an eastern martial artist whose ancestors defended the people against Eyedol and Gargos). The only fighters from the original game who do not appear in Killer Instinct 2 are Riptor, Chief Thunder, and Cinder. Though Fulgore, Spinal, and Glacius "return" as playable characters, they are different entities than the ones played in the previous game; Fulgore is a different model after the first one was destroyed by Jago (and is now given the mission to kill Jago), Spinal is a different skeleton, and this Glacius is a descendant (from 2,000 years in the past) of the one who fought in the first game. The sequel also introduced a rock-paper-scissors system for special moves, in which moves could be countered by certain other moves. As of 2010, there may be plans for a Killer Instinct 3.

1 The first 2 games are awesome but the third one is a freemium which is a disappointment! -- Submitted By: (TomPettyFan) on September 10, 2018, 9:46 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
2 Oh yes the new Killer Instinct is out and it looks okay. But what bothers me the most is how much the microtransaction has raped that game. I praise Double Helix for getting this game going but at the same token, I'd much prefer RARE to do it. -- Submitted By: () on March 14, 2014, 4:04 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
