Celebrities - John Wayne

John Wayne (May 26, 1907 to June 11, 1979) was an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award winning American film actor. He epitomized rugged masculinity and has become an enduring American icon. He is famous for his distinctive voice, walk and height. He was also known for his conservative political views and his support in the 1950s for anti communist positions. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Wayne 13th among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time. A Harris Poll released in 2007 placed Wayne third among America's favorite film stars, the only deceased star on the list and the only one who has appeared on the poll every year.

1 OK Soggy9000, you stated that John Wayne avoided military service during WWII and spent the rest of his career trying to make up for it. According to his bio he originally applied to the Naval Academy but was turned down. He then went into acting and when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entered the war he was already 34 and married and wasn't likely to be drafted. He then wrote to John Ford asking to be placed in his military unit but the studio got wind of this and threatened to sue him for violating his contract. He did spend the rest of his career supporting the troops, not because of guilt from having not served, but from pride for all they did for him. Next time you post a comment please try to get the facts straight. The link to all this information was right here on the entry. The Duke didn't bone. -- Submitted By: (JoeBagODonuts) on May 2, 2012, 11:18 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
2 Avoided military service during WW2 because it would have interfered with his movie career, then spent the rest of his life trying to atone for his selfishness by becoming a hyper-patriot. Should have gotten an Oscar for The Searchers. Voted for few of the same folks I voted for, but he was a damn good guy nonetheless. -- Submitted By: (Soggy9000) on April 20, 2011, 8:17 pm - (-2 votes) - Login to Vote
3 True- Understated and that includes his attempt to play GENGHIS KHAN ("The Conqueror"- 1956) as a hero(kidja not!). Unfortunately, not only did the Duke himself bone with that movie but so did so many of his costars including Susan Hayward (playing his Empress Bortai as a redheaded Tartar princess), Agnes Moorehead as GK's mom (yes Endora herself) who all contracted and died from deadly forms of cancer due to being exposed to nearby nuclear test sites while filming this howlingly bad debacle! One thing that puzzled me is why he chose the name 'John' and not Duke as his performing name when everyone from his youth onward called him that (and, yes, Duke Wayne would have still sounded far more rugged in the billing than his real name of Marion Michael Morrison). Oh, and I'd also like to note that the tag came from his favorite childhood dog! -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on December 11, 2010, 4:07 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote

5 I don't think he's boned, although I was pretty disappointed when I found out he was a Freemason. -- Submitted By: (cartooner) on November 10, 2010, 9:34 pm - (-3 votes) - Login to Vote
