Websites - Angry Video Game Nerd, The

The Angry Video Game Nerd (abbreviated as AVGN, occasionally shortened to The Nerd) is the titular character of a series of farcical retrogaming video reviews by James D. Rolfe. The show generally revolves around retro game reviews that involve bitter rants against particularly low-quality or poorly designed video games. The series began as a feature on YouTube, and later joined ScrewAttack Entertainment, which would later have three of its features, including the AVGN, transferred to GameTrailers exclusively. The show was formerly known as The Angry Nintendo Nerd, a title that was abandoned to avoid legal issues due to the Nintendo trademark, and because the show started reviewing games on other consoles. The titular Nerd character is an ill-tempered and foul-mouthed video game fanatic. He derives comic appeal from excessive and inventive use of profanity (particularly the word fuck), frequent displays of explicit gestures, and heavy consumption of beer, particularly Rolling Rock or Yuengling, to "soothe the pain". A particular characteristic, which has become something of a trademark of his character, is for him to describe, in great detail, extremely repulsive and painful, usually firmly scatological acts, and to claim that he would rather endure them than to play the game that he is reviewing. Varying amounts of physical comedy are mixed into the verbal abuse.

I have a feeling if and when he gets the movie out, that he'd end it. I've always enjoyed it when James gets in that mood to review a bad game, he literally rips into the review. Just completely analyzes the game thoroughly, insults it's flaws, and flat out acts out the inner rage we get when playing a bad game or a hard game. But when he started to be theatric about his later reviews, it really boned the fish for me. His reactions are exaggerated, the cursing has really been played out and is taking it's toll, not that I'm offended by cursing. I just feel as if he has lost touch somehow and is wearing down his character year after year. Nostalgia Critic knew when his time was up, I'm hoping James knows the same for AVGN. AVGN doesn't have to disappear completely forever. Just needs a break. -- Submitted By: (Toasticus) on December 1, 2012, 12:36 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote

Mixed feelings about AVGN cancelling. "After the Movie" is as a common boning moment as "Cousin Oliver", but there are literally hundreds of bad games out there for James to review. With the Wii, XBox360, and PS3 reaching the point of obsolescence (as well as the Gamecube, PS2, and XBox being over 10 years old), the number of bad games on old consoles will only grow. Then again, you don't want the Nerd to become a self-parody because it just won't cancel (cough *Simpsons* cough). There are other bad game reviewers on YouTube who are just as fun as the Nerd, so if he does retire, you can watch them instead. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on November 24, 2012, 12:45 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I kind of hope he ends the series with the movie. E.T. is the ultimate bad game, the one that created a video game depression for three years (ended by the launch of Nintendo in 1986), and I don't see where you can go from there. James Rolfe is a very talented guy, and I'd like to see other projects he has up his sleeve, but I'm afraid AVGN would grow stale after the movie. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on November 18, 2012, 11:53 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
As I write this, in less than a week, the movie trailer has almost a million hits. It would've been cool if it were released in December 2012, the 30-year anniversary of ET's release on Atari. Better late than never, and ET sucked because it was rushed to make it to stores on time. The belated AVGN:TM release could be seen as satire, or a lesson being taught too late. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on November 15, 2012, 7:20 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
AVGN: The Movie looks to be amazing. Can't wait to see it. I wonder where it all goes from here. Trailer here: http://youtu.be/eiz95K1ngiI -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on November 10, 2012, 5:27 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I hope he doesn't throw in the Nerd towel anytime soon. There are so many other bad games out there that he hasn't reviewed yet. I also commend him for respecting his fans; he could have quit after his burnout, but he instead slowed down to one episode a month. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on August 22, 2010, 12:23 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I love this guy's show, too. Unfortunately, he's kind of hinted that he's getting burned out with the whole thing and has dropped down to one show a month. I hope he keeps it going, but I can understand how it must be hard to come up with different ways to say, "This game sucks" every couple of weeks. -- Submitted By: (Travoltron) on August 6, 2010, 2:42 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Hasn't boned yet, but it may happen soon. He's done reviews of some of the most notorious in terms of poorly-designed games (Superman 64 and Action 52 to name a couple) and they were pretty good. -- Submitted By: (BigAl) on August 5, 2010, 10:40 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Hasn't boned yet, but it could soon. James has done a terrific job turning what were personal video game rants on YouTube into a great web series that is creative and funny. His nerd persona is totally vulgar in a hilarious way and the nostalgic factor is awesome. I don't dig episodes that talk about newer games as much because I don't think that's what the show is about or the audience it's aimed for. I'm starting to wonder how long this can continue, though. Most of the really bad games from yesteryear have been reviewed and based on some of the more current videos, it seems as if he's starting to run out of ideas with his show or maybe getting bored with it. If that's the case, he should hang it up before it goes on too long. Repetition could be the cause of fish boning with this show, but it hasn't quite gotten there yet. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on May 10, 2010, 5:09 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
