TV Shows - Miss America Pageant, The

Long running annual pageant that has been both revered and ridiculed over the years. Went from taking place every September in Atlantic City, New Jersey and being televised on a prime-time major network to recently, being aired in January on cable networks in almost an "American Idol" format.

1 At least Miss America contestants are intelligent. Remember Carrie Prejean? And Catilin Upton, who can't find South Carolina on a map? -- Submitted By: (Northeastern292) on January 29, 2013, 9:54 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
2 Sorry, DolFan, with all due respect, it's appears you haven't ever watched the Miss America pageant but instead, are confusing it with the Miss USA pageant. (this is a common blunder when the word "pageant" comes up.) The only requirements for the Miss USA pageant is blonde hair and big boobs. The Miss America pageant, however, is a SCHOLARSHIP pageant: i.e. these girls have to have a brain and a good GPA to even participate. As much as college costs these days, how can that be "outdated"? They aren't pretending to be "pure as the driven snow" and the swimsuit competitions are now done in bikinis. They are not asked "What would you do to save the world" but instead, are asked questions re: current events. And it's not WHAT they answer but HOW articulately and intelligently they answer. The winners and the runners-up on the state level and Miss America level win scholarship money, which allows them to pursue an education. Former winners have become doctors, news journalists, veterinarians, lawyers, etc. Check out the website to see the former Miss Americas' careers: http://www.missamerica.org/our-miss-americas/ -- Submitted By: (Stephanie) on January 20, 2011, 11:45 am - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
3 Sorry Stephanie, I normally agree with what you say but the Miss America Pageant is outdated, antiquated, and needs to be put to rest. It was a nice concept back in, say, 1950, but why should anyone care about women pretending to be pure as the driven snow, the swimsuit competition involving ONE PIECE suits, and the ridiculous "what would you do to save the world" questions that they *always* have the most ludicrous answers for? The last time this turkey entertained me was when Seinfeld did a spoof show about it. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on January 19, 2011, 8:32 pm - (-4 votes) - Login to Vote
4 OK, it "un-boned" this year since it was aired on ABC. I still do not like the way they have the 12 semi-finalists all sitting around on stage, during the talent competition, waiting to have their names called. But only 10 are called, so that leaves 2 sitting there, having to smile even though they didn't make the final cut. :( -- Submitted By: (Stephanie) on January 19, 2011, 3:50 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
5 In the fall of 1990, Bert Parks (who hosted the pageant from 1955 to 1979) was invited back to sing "Here She Is, Miss America," the song he had made famous. But he was overwhelmed and made a few mistakes, and never returned after that. -- Submitted By: (markrabo) on November 19, 2009, 6:12 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
6 I still can't believe it's not aired nationally anymore. Love it or hate it: this is an American institution! The last time I watched it, it was done in almost an "American Idol" format, with the viewers phoning or texting in their votes. *frowns* Guess I'm a traditionalist. -- Submitted By: (Stephanie) on November 12, 2009, 11:52 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
