Random Topics - Flip Flops (Footwear)

Although footwear consisting of a sole attached by two straps anchored by the big toe was perhaps the earliest for humans in temperate climates, the modern version as we know it did not know much usage in Western European/North American spheres until after World War II when a rubber version of the Japanese zori was developed for use in showers to minimize the spread of althelete's foot, etc. In the 1950's-80's, wearing these in public places seemed restricted to surfers, collegiantes, coastal tourists and counterculture affionadoes in the hottest weather. However; by the end of the first decade of the New Millenium, they became rather widespread for both genders in all age ranges and social backgrounds in virtually every temperate locale in the Western world. Some wearers even claim to have conditioned themselves to wear them in subfreezing temperatures- regardless of the immediate threat of frostbite or the later possible development of crippling rheumatism . Virtually the only public venues where flip flops are currently discouraged are hazardous locations, workplaces and the most formal of restaurants and events. While they give the wearer near barefoot feel, flip flops have disadvantages such as offering no protection from sharp objects from above/aside, proving difficult to travel in faster than a walking gait, leaving the foot completely vulnerable to weathers, and the straps causing blisters to more sensative skin.

1 Day 1 for me. They dont provide enough support and I cannot stand the sensation of the piece that goes in between the toes. -- Submitted By: (TomPettyFan) on September 13, 2018, 1:48 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
2 Flip flops are okay if you are going to the beach, the pool, showering at a gym, or going to grab your mail. Other than these places, I think they are tacky to wear. They cause a ton of foot injuries, they expose your feet to grim and other dirt, and they look rather sloppy. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on July 24, 2013, 12:42 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote

4 I'm probably in the minority as I am a Male who would rather wear flip flops more than any other type of shoe, although I do make sure to wear proper shoes in places such as Church, resturants, etc. There's nothing wrong with wearing flips in public like at a mall, or store, to the movies, getting gas for the car, to the post office, to an outdoor event. I never used to wear them until several years ago I bought a pair prior to going down to the Florida Keys. Now I own at least a dozen pair. Most are different styles, not just the $2.99 pair you'll find at many stores. I live in the Midwest where we only have nice weather about 6 to 7 months so I cherish the times my feet are in flips. The office I work in allows flip flops to be worn only on casual Fridays and I'm right there with many of the Gals who all wear them, and most say they wish they could get their Husbands/Boyfriends to wear them as well. It's very easy to find stylish flip flops that look nice instead of tacky. -- Submitted By: (MichaelJL) on April 13, 2010, 12:39 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote

6 These "shoes", need only be worn in 4 places: 1) the beach; 2) the shower at a public camping ground; 3) walking from your front door to the end of your driveway to get your paper; and 4)your backyard. They are NOT to be worn to the following places: 1) church; 2) work (unless you work at the beach); 3) the grocery store; 4) the theatre. -- Submitted By: (Stephanie) on September 28, 2009, 11:41 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
