Movie Series - Hercules (Disney movie)

Hercules was a 1997 Disney movie based on the ancient Greek legend. It starred Tate Donovan as Hercules, Rip Torn as Zeus, James Woods as Hades, Susan Egan as Megara, Danny Devito as Phil, and Charlton Heston as the narrator. Hercules, the son of Hera and Zeus, is born, and all the gods celebrate the event. The god of the underworld Hades plans to take over Mt. Olympus. He learns from the fates that in 18 years, he will have the opportunity to overthrow Zeus, but will fail if Hercules fights him. He sends his shapeshifting henchmen Pain and Panic to administer a potion that will turn the baby mortal, but since they failed to make him drink every last drop, he keeps his superhuman strength. He is adopted by Amphitryon and his wife Alcmene, who live on a farm. Years pass, and Hercules becomes an outcast because of his strength and clumsiness. Soon, his foster parents decide to tell him he was found with the symbol of the gods around his neck. When he visits the temple of Zeus, the statue of Zeus comes to life and reveals he is Hercules' father. Since Hercules is no longer a god, he cannot return to his home in Mt. Olympus. The only way he can restore his godhood is to become a hero, and to become a hero, he must train under the satyr Philoctetes, aka Phil. When Hercules heads to Thebes with Phil, he meets the femme fatale Megara. To make it family-friendly, the movie differs from the original ancient Greek legend, which involves rape, adultery, and murder. Its sequel, released direct-to-video in 1998, is Hercules: Zero to Hero, and takes place during the time when Hercules is being trained by Philoctetes. It follows his enrollment at Prometheus Academy, and serves as the pilot of the Hercules animated series.

1 Of all the Greek legends to make into movies for kids, Hercules is one of the worst choices. They had to drastically change the story from the original to make it kiddie-friendly. Hera is NOT his biological mother. Zeus slept with a human woman, Alcmene, after Zeus took the form of her husband Amphitryon, and Hercules (actually Heracles, meaning "Glory to Hera", named thus in a failed attempt to please Hera) was conceived. Hera was his worst enemy, not Hades. She made him suffer, drove him to kill his own children, put him into slavery and servitude, etc. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on September 27, 2009, 10:48 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
