TV Shows - 64,000 Dollar Question, The
Became the poster child for the quiz show scandals of the 1950s. Each week contestants were asked increasingly difficult questions in a self-selected specialty (e.g., opera, baseball, etc.), with the prize doubling till it reached $64,000. It's hard now to appreciate how huge that was at a time when gasoline cost 20 cents a gallon and cigarettes 20 cents a pack. When it emerged that some contestants had been given the answers in advance, the nation was shocked.
