Movie Series - Hunchback of Notre Dame, The (Disney movie)

Released in 1996, The Hunchback of Notre Dame was based on the Victor Hugo story. The Minister of Justice, Frollo, persecutes gypsies. Seeing a gypsy woman with a bundle he believes to be stolen goods, he pursues and subsequently kills her. When he learns the bundle is a deformed infant, he prepares to drown it in the well, but is ordered to raise the child as his own by the Archdeacon, who witnessed his act of murder. 20 years later, Quasimodo grows up and wants to attend the festival, which Frollo forbids. When his three gargoyle friends Victor, Laverne, and Hugo encourage him to sneak out, he goes for it. He enjoys the festivities and eventually meets Esmeralda. He is crowned King of Fools, but ends up being humiliated by the cruelty of the guards and townspeople. Esmeralda goes to help him, and Frollo (who is secretly in love with Esmeralda) demands that she get away from him (as he felt that Quasimodo was being taught a lesson for disobeying his orders). She defies him by setting Quasimodo free. Furious, Frollo orders Captain Phoebus (who is also in love with Esmeralda) to capture her. She escapes, and manages to hide in the cathedral, protected from arrest by the law of sanctuary. Though based on the Victor Hugo book, the Disney movie differs from the original story in many ways. The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 was a direct-to-video sequel released in 2002. This time, many years have passed, and Esmeralda and Phoebus have a son, Zephyr. A circus of thieves is in town, and they steal a bell named La Fidele.

Hunchback of Notre Dame, The (Disney movie) Comments (You must Login to Comment)

1 I liked the Easter Eggs in this movie. Near the beginning, when you see the crowd in the square you see Scar (From The Lion King) make a cameo, as well as Belle (from (Beauty and the beast). There are also Homages to The Three Stooges and The Wizard of Oz. -- Submitted By: (Regulus) on June 18, 2013, 7:51 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
2 The darkest and one of the best and most underrated Disney films ever made. Frollo is the greatest of all Disney villains. -- Submitted By: (BostonCeltz) on June 9, 2010, 3:19 pm - (-1 votes) - Login to Vote
