TV Shows - Eight Simple Rules

8 Simple Rules is a sitcom that aired on ABC for three TV seasons, from September 2002 to April 2005. Originally with the longer title of "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter," the show starred John Ritter and Katey Sagal as Paul and Cate Hennessy, parents of two teenage daughters and one son, with Paul returning to the home as Cate returned to the workplace. The first season focused on Paul's struggling with the responsibility of raising teenage daughters and missing his former career as a sportswriter. When John Ritter died in September 2003 at the beginning of the second season, his death was incorporated into the show, dealing with Cate and the children reacting to Paul's death and moving on with their lives. Later in the series, James Garner and David Spade joined the cast, playing Cate's father and nephew, respectively.

1 I laughed when I saw Pokey's comment that the Big Bang Theory is "almost dead." The show remains, even deep into summer reruns, the highest rated show on TV (source: TV By The Numbers). I agree it has become stale and I miss as many episodes as I watch but the show is hardly "almost dead." Any show that can annihilate ratings juggernauts like Big Brother with a 3rd run repeat definitely has a loyal fan base that will still watch in it's 25th season (shudder). Just ask the Simpsons. -- Submitted By: (spacer) on July 18, 2015, 6:22 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
2 This is also the show that gave us Kaley Cuoco.....last seen in "Wedding Ringer" the movie and the almost dead TV sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" as Penny (with the two juggling sacks of pennies.). -- Submitted By: (PokeyJHorse) on March 26, 2015, 7:54 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
3 Brilliant show before John Ritter died, superb cast and the interaction between characters was incredibly realistic. If they had to keep the show on the air (after all it was a huge hit)they should have let it be Katey Sagal's show. She is certainly strong enough to carry the lead! James Garner's grand dad was a nice touch but the show totally destroyed itself when David Spade showed up! It went from being a sweet show about a sweet family to a moronic mass-produced sitcom with characters you wanted to hate. -- Submitted By: (jmac9909) on May 13, 2013, 12:44 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
4 I was wondering about paul's family during the series and paul's death...did paul ever metioned his mom or dad during the show? I thought they show up during paul's memorial or his death! -- Submitted By: (thedude19766) on August 6, 2012, 2:59 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
5 Trying to continue this show after John Ritter's unfortunate death would be like trying to continue Roseanne if she had died of a heart attack in the middle of the fifth season. And don't think they wouldn't have done that too. After Ritter died, there should have been one final episode to tie up any loose ends and then cancelled. A show doesn't work without its main character. -- Submitted By: (TheCeej) on April 20, 2011, 2:49 pm - (5 votes) - Login to Vote
6 John Ritter's passing gave this show an unfortunate short end. He was part of the show, his character was needed. Never saw David Spade's parts, but he probably would not have worked as well as a main character. -- Submitted By: (johnnydough) on May 19, 2010, 4:10 pm - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
7 Baldrick, I agree! If anyone had told me that Rockford would AVOID living with Suzanne Pleshette(who played Gramps' estranged wife in the John Ritter memorial ep) but opt to his nephew David Spade, I'd have told asked what they were smoking. Who in their right minds would have preferred living with David Spade over Suzanne Pleshette for any reason?! -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on May 19, 2010, 8:25 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
8 It may have worked okay with just Jim Garner doing a kind of "stay away from my grand daughters" thing in Ritter's place but the network suits had to drag Spade on set to do his "business" all over the family casserole. He just didn't fit in. He never does. -- Submitted By: (baldrick) on May 18, 2010, 5:23 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
9 This was a good show until John Ritter unfortunately and unexpectedly passed away. Then it went to pot. Trying to shore it up by adding James Garner and David Spade only seem to mke it worse. Wehn John was alive, the show was about a father dealing with accepting his teenage daughters were dating and the sometimes humorous ways fathers react to the fact that their little girls are now women that men are interested in. when he passed away that was not possible and it became mostly about Katey Sagal putting up with David Spade's lame antics. -- Submitted By: (meQal) on October 26, 2009, 10:48 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
