Celebrities - John Mellencamp

John Mellencamp, previously known by the stage names Johnny Cougar, John Cougar, and John Cougar Mellencamp, (born October 7, 1951) is an American rock singer-songwriter, musician, painter and occasional actor known for his catchy, populist brand of heartland rock that eschews synthesizers and other artificial sounds in favor of acoustic instrumentation. He has sold over 40 million albums worldwide and has amassed 22 Top 40 hits in the United States. In addition, he holds the record for the most tracks by a solo artist to hit number-one on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, with seven, and has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning one. His latest album, No Better Than This, was released on August 17, 2010 to widespread critical acclaim. Mellencamp is also one of the founding members of Farm Aid, an organization that began in 1985 with a concert in Champaign, Illinois to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on their land. The Farm Aid concerts have remained an annual event over the past 26 years, and as of 2011 the organization has raised over $39 million to promote a strong and resilient family farm system of agriculture. The 2011 Farm Aid concert will take place on August 13 at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas. Mellencamp was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008 by Billy Joel.[1] His biggest musical influences are Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and The Rolling Stones.[2]

1 Pelirojo, I'm scandalized!! I'm beside myself with rage!!!How dare you!!!! LOL Hey, I'm not gonna bust your chops over a small matter of personal taste. Besides, I didn't say Mellencamp had no talent or was a bad person; I only said that he isn't my particular cup of tea. Part of it is a genre bias; I've never been into the whole heartland rock thing. (And not only because it's so TV-commercial-friendly.) -- Submitted By: (Soggy9000) on May 18, 2011, 7:33 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
2 In the hiearchy of "Heartland rockers" (which I always found ironic since Bruce Springsteen is based in Jersey, about as far from the Heartland as you can get), John Mellencamp was always in the lower part of it. That doesn't mean I dislike his music. I don't. I just don't have the same enjoyment of it that I do say Bruce Springsteen or Bob Seger. I just find myself listening to them more often and enjoying them more than I do John Mellencamp. I will give him credit for his outreach on rural flight. Being formally from the Midwest, I know that is a definite issue with more young people ditching that part of the country for one of the coasts or the sunbelt. I also liked when Billy Joel talked about how Mellencamp plays football for fun when JM was inducted into the Hall of Fame. The thought of JM and Billy Joel playing football for some reason cracks me up. I guess I just don't picture middle-aged men like these two doing that in their spare time. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on May 18, 2011, 3:52 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
3 Soggy, All your kudos of my past posts makes me a bit hesitant to have to disagree with you here [and it's nothing personal] but I have to disagree. I know he hasn't had a hit in a good decade but I always liked "Jack+Diane" and thought "R.O.C.K. in the USA" did an excellent job capturing how early 1960's teens of different backgrounds got together through a shared love of making music! Also, he's been very helpful to try to keep family run farms a way of life in this country so that in itself I give high marks for! -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on May 18, 2011, 8:29 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
4 The so-called "poor man's Springsteen" never floated my boat. Nor has he had a decent-selling album in at least ten years. -- Submitted By: (Soggy9000) on May 18, 2011, 2:00 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
5 Anyone else remember that HORRIBLY annoying "THis is ooouuurrr country" truck ad song he did a few years ago that made me want to jam a fork though my ear into my brain? One of the most annoying ads of all time IMO. A BTF moment if I ever saw one! -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on June 29, 2010, 6:35 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
6 To be fair, MCS, the 'John Cougar' then 'John Cougar Mellencamp' tags seemed to have been foisted on him by his then-labels and he's been performed without any feline tags ever since. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on June 27, 2010, 2:29 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
7 I like how he sang about farmers in the Midwest. If you go there you can see the effects of rural flight. That being said, the name changes are annoying. Is it going to be JCM soon? Or is he going to pick some other feline name? -- Submitted By: (MCS) on June 26, 2010, 6:09 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
