TV Shows - Grady

Grady was an unsuccessful spin-off from the highly successful sitcom, Sanford and Son. In this series, Fred Sanford's widower friend Grady (again played by Whitman Mayo) moves out of Watts and moves in with his daughter and her family in Westwood. Executive producer Norman Lear served as a consultant to the show.

1 I didn't vote on this one because I really only saw the pilot (actually an S&S episode), but I think they gave Grady his own series as payback for his "holding the fort" when Redd Foxx was in a contract dispute with WNBC. Some of the "Grady" episodes of S&S, like Wild Parsley, Cousin Emma and the Ron Glass (character just getting out of prison) episodes of S&S were pretty good, so maybe that's why they thought he could star in his own series. Problem was the premise. Nobody wanted to see Grady as a curmudgeonly grandfather. He worked better as one of FS' cronies watching monster movies and the fights. -- Submitted By: (ParkerTillman) on June 12, 2012, 4:11 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
2 Yeah, and Grady's friendship with Fred seemed as believable as the Fonz's with Potsie. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on June 26, 2011, 7:12 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
3 I like how the producers of "Sanford and Son" thought - of all the great characters on that show - that the witless Grady (Whitman Mayo) should have his own sitcom. Not Lamont, Bubba, Rollo, Donna, Hoppy or even the great Aunt Esther, but the idiot Grady (who's lame catchphrase was "Good Gooblygook"). After 12 episodes (11 more than were needed to prove the point), this bluegill was ripe for the boning and Mayo skulked back to the S&S set with his beard between his legs. -- Submitted By: (GregEichelberger) on July 16, 2009, 11:09 pm - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
