TV Shows - Munsters Today, The

The Munsters Today (also known as The New Munsters) is an American syndicated television series that was a sequel from the 1960s popular sitcom The Munsters. The Munsters Today was produced from October 8, 1988 to September 7, 1991, with 72 episodes (it had more first run episodes than the original series). The pilot explained the 22 year gap from the original series, by showing the family as they were in 1966 when an accident took place; and the family then proceed to wake up in 1988. The 1988 color remake of classic TV sitcom The Munsters, starring former McMillan and Wife alumnus, John Schuck (as Herman), former Barnaby Jones alumna, Lee Meriwether (as Lily), Howard Morton (Grandpa), Hilary Van Dyke (Marilyn) and Jason Marsden (Eddie). The series lasted three successful seasons on syndicated television, and proved popular with international audiences. It was created following a failed attempt to revive the show with most of the original cast (Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis and Yvonne De Carlo) in 1981 in the NBC telefilm The Munsters' Revenge. Munsters' Revenge was a network test for a possible new show. The idea was dropped as the film did poorly. Gwynne turned down the chance to reprise his role as Herman. Lewis was unhappy he was not asked to reprise his role, which he kept close to his heart for years since the show ceased. Morton was consider a suitable replacement Grandpa, and Meriwether as Lily.

1 This was the worst show EVER! 72 episodes, really?? Should have been cancelled half way through the opening credits of episode 1! -- Submitted By: (spacer) on October 21, 2014, 9:04 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
2 OMG! I did not that this show even existed. I eagerly watched an episode on HULU because of the cast, Lee Meriwether as Lily and Jason Marsden who played Eddie. I turned off the first episode after a few minutes, it was THAT bad, and skipped ahead several episodes. It was even worse. How this thing stayed on the air for 72 episodes is a real mystery. The guy who played Herman was so miscast it was pathetic and although Lee Meriwether has done some pretty good work, her Lily was horrible. The only decent acting came from Jason Marsden. His Eddie was funny and clever but they never gave him enough to do. Whenever he did something interesting, it was "go outside and play, Eddie!" And that would be the last you saw him in that episode. I think his average screen time was under two minutes per episode, sometimes he only got 30 seconds. As soon as The Munsters Today was cancelled, Jason went on to play the mystery teen, Dash X in Eerie, Indiana. A phenomenal role that really let him stretch out as an actor. Sadly, that show only had 19 episodes while The Munsters Today today went on for 72! -- Submitted By: (martymarty) on July 28, 2014, 9:16 am - (3 votes) - Login to Vote
3 "Popular with international audiences".....and people wonder why Americans are so damned arrogant. Could it be the rest of the world is just completely daft? -- Submitted By: (ParkerTillman) on June 15, 2012, 11:11 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
4 That show was not good-period. It boggles my mind to read that it went on for three seasons. -- Submitted By: (Friedrich_Feuerstein) on October 5, 2010, 11:49 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
5 John Shuck was not good as Herman. -- Submitted By: (PrinceJ) on August 2, 2010, 8:00 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote

7 In honor of the REAL Munsters (with Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis and Yvonne DeCarlo doing some of the best work of their varied careers), can we just forget this latter mess ever happened? -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on September 21, 2009, 7:21 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
