Music Groups - Milli Vanilli

Milli Vanilli was a pop/dance music project formed by Frank Farian in Germany in 1988, fronted by Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus. The group's debut album achieved high sales internationally which earned them a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1990. The act became one of the most popular pop acts in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, their success turned to infamy when their Grammy was revoked after it was revealed that the actual vocals on the record were not the voices of Morvan and Pilatus. In 1998, ten years after Milli Vanilli's initial debut, Pilatus was found dead in a Frankfurt hotel of an apparent drug overdose.

1 I remember Milli Vanilli being so popular from late '89 to early 1990. There were contests, appearances on the Jim Henson Hour, song references on Full House (it was big then), mentions on In Living Color, and a remix album. At the start of 1990, they were "all" of that, but by the end, "nothing". Get it, they had a song called "All or Nothing." Of course, I was referring to Rob and Fab, not the old dudes who were actually member of the band. In the 80s and very early 90s, many lip-synching dancers were used as substitutes for overweight or elderly singers. I remember Martha Wash calling out the music director of the C&C Music Factory videos for using Velma Davis over her. Then, Marky Mark actually had Martha Wash in his video, I think. Back on topic, Milli Vanillli jumped the shark when their video dancers were outed. I even remember the lip-synching incident being referenced on ABC's Perfect Strangers. All throughout the HW Bush era, the dancers and the band tried to redeem themselves. Rob and Fab were featured in a Carefree sugarless gum commercial (when's the last time you saw one of those). The band went on to a produce another album under the name, "The Real Milli Vanilli". Two years after that one came out, Rob and Fab put out their album. Needless to say, no one bought it. I remember myself lip-synching Milli Vanilli in 1992, hehe. It was very sad to hear about Rob's suicide in 1998. I hope he is resting in peace. -- Submitted By: (tvwatcher7) on September 13, 2014, 2:32 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
2 It wasn't just the fact that they were lip synching -- the fact that OTHER artists were actually singing their songs. To my knowledge, Britney, Ashley etc. are lip synching to their own voices (I CAN'T believe I'm defending them -- shoot me now!) They released another album with "The Real Milli Vanilli" featuring what the singers actually looked like. They didn't look glammy like Rob and Fab and it didn't sell well. So still showed that unfortunately image still sells. (But it did have the scandal to fuel the fire). I used to like their songs to that point myself and was a definite bone fishing for me. hands down. -- Submitted By: (ocfernan) on October 10, 2009, 8:27 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
3 Compared to the garbage that is today's pop stars, Milli Vanilli seems like the Freakin' Beatles. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on May 5, 2009, 11:30 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote

5 You are so right. All these pop stars nowadays? And here we are, panning Milli Vanilli. I don't care for pop anyways. And as for the Grammys, I think all awards shows are rigged one way or another. The Simpsons episode, "The Seemingly Never-Ending Story", won an Emmy. Just about every other episode from season 17 was way better than that one, yet it won an Emmy? All these other shows it was up against, yet THAT won the Emmy? If the awards ceremony WASN'T rigged, then THAT would surprise me. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on May 4, 2009, 12:37 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
6 I think what Milli vanilli did was to expose the Grammys for being such a bunch of crap. Now I'm no music expert, but how can people that are the cream of the music elite not be able to pick up on these guys lip-synching? I've held the grammys in a low opinion for a long time, so I want to THANK milli vanilli for exposing them as the bigger REAL frauds- much more so than Rob and Fab. And like I said before, I was always amused at the idiots that bought this music in the first place destroying the albums they liked to listen to- did the music change? For example, if you found out Led Zeppelin was 4 trained animals playing usic, and not Page, Bonzo, Plant and Jones- couldnt you still enjoy the music? Not if you were a early 90's pop music fan- they needed that image to listen to the music, it's very shallow. And why didnt the fans flock to the people that sang ethe music? THEY DIDNT CARE, it was all about image, and who wanted to follow two overweight middle aged people? So thanks again to Milli Vanilli for exposing that whole fan base as the superficial frauds that they are. Also one more point on the MV attacks, look at all of the fraud artists of today- Jessica SImpson, Ashlee Simpson, Britney... etc. Do any of them even really sing? Can they do a live show? They caught Ashlee lipsynching, she gets a pass? Wha?! The more I think back on Rob and Fab, hats off for pulling one off- NEVER BONED!!! -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on May 4, 2009, 12:08 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
7 The thing is, though lip syncing is not a horrible crime as many people make it out to be, they won a Grammy through the use of deception. Many people consider lying and deception to be a more serious crime. Take Clinton's cheating: he wasn't impeached for sleeping with Monica Lewinsky, he was impeached for LYING about sleeping with Monica Lewinsky. I don't know why, but it's the way things are. Back to Milli Vanilli, it's a shame Pilatus killed himself. But I agree it's unfair that other people who did much more horrible things are still admired, while Milli Vanilli are condemned just for lip syncing. -- Submitted By: (Robert) on May 4, 2009, 11:51 am - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
8 This is an interesting case of Fish Boning, or in this thesis, a NEVER BONED explanation. Hear me out- Obviously this is two guys that lip-synced and it was fashionable, and funny to goof on them, thus an obvious FISH BONE. However, in retrospect, I feel very bad that these two people were harassed into one of them dying from drugs, and becoming public pariahs for lip synching, and when you think of the bad people in the world, what did these two really do? Pretended to sing? But they did SO much more for us #1- they exposed the Grammys for being bush league, and for that alone we can thank them #2- They exposed MTV, and the idiotic fans of things like top 40 music and even things that didnt exist yet like ASHLEE SIMPSON and AMERICAN IDOL for being that superficial- you now hate the music and will destroy CD's because they pretty face isnt singing it? Why not still enjoy it if you always enjoyed it? Why not follow the real singers if appearance didnt matter to your vapid minds? Oh wait they were older, out of shape people... Lame. And #3-These guys provided a TON of humor to all us, and were the butt of alot of jokes, so lets give them credit for the laughs, it was much better than the music they didnt sing. So lets give them a retro, or even post-humous NEVER BONED for their service in exposing the idiocy of pop music and it's mindless fans. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on May 4, 2009, 7:36 am - (2 votes) - Login to Vote
