The last episode should have been when Jackie and Fred got married in 1994. After that, the show declined into too many fantasy episodes and watered down plots. In the last episode, Roseanne seemed to be trying to get even with her critics in Hollywood, but ended up only slapping her fans in the face. What had once been a very funny story about the most realistic TV family to date turned out to be only a novel of the Roseanne Connor character. The fans who made Roseanne wealthy were cheated by this ending. -- Submitted By: (JTScomments) on August 25, 2014, 1:31 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
You could hear the jaws of the shark snap shut in the silence of the Last Supper. Jackie takes Roseanne's advice to make Fred a romantic dinner to spark their relationship. It's a failure. Fred and Jackie have nothing to say. Jackie says she thinks it's over. Fred agrees and says he'll pack after dinner. This marked the death of the show. After this, Darlene and David reunite, Roseanne and Dan imagine being on Gilligan's Island and bust a bar mitzvah, the new restaurant opens across the street, the first Becky returns, etc. The aforementioned episode is the starting point. -- Submitted By: (JTScomments) on August 25, 2014, 1:29 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
At first you think the show jumped the shark when they won the lottery, but if you think back, it was when baby Jerry was born on that Horrific Halloween Episode. -- Submitted By: (JTScomments) on August 25, 2014, 1:29 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote

When Darlene left for college the show seemed to lose something special. Sara Gilbert's absence was too obvious from most episodes. I think it actually jumped somewhere before the lottery but the lottery was the final nail in the coffin. -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 9:32 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Even though the show jumped before it, just want to go on the record and say once again, that "Roseambo" was one of the most terrible episodes of any show I've ever seen. Roseanne is still my favorite show by far but Roseambo seemed like the result of something that was written while on acid, meth and crack at the same damn time. -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 9:31 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I actually found many of the Lunchbox episodes hilarious. It wasn't until around after the time Roseanne got pregnant with "Jerry Garcia" that I started to find the episodes pretty lackluster and like they were running out of ideas. Women Roseanne's age CAN still have children, but it just seemed unnecessary, like she got pregnant just because Jackie did or something. And who names their kid Jerry Garcia Conner? Also, Jerry was pretty pointless. There were more than enough characters running around as it was. The storylines became more and more muddled and superfluous. The writing became less sharp and humorous. I think the show should have ended right after Jackie and Fred's wedding because to me that episode was the last episode that actually felt like "Roseanne" (with a couple of s exceptions, such as the episode where DJ didn't want to kiss the black girl in the school play which I think presented with the issue realistically). -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 9:29 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
This was not a JTS moment but I just want to say that I thought Crystal was weird and didn't get why they put so much focus on her and Dan's dad getting together. Idk about everybody else but I for one, didn't give a damn about Crystal having the hots for Dan's pop or vice versa. I didn't exactly hate Crystal, I just thought she was uninteresting and stiff and any episodes focusing on her seemed forced. -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 9:20 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
The great thing about Roseanne was that it addressed normal, everyday, blue-collar, middle class family life. When they hit the jackpot, the show lost its soul. And Jackie, who'd been hilarious the entire run of the show, suddenly became a total basket case. Like a female Don Knotts. What was up with that cop-out of a series finale? I hate it when shows do that. I still love the show so much, it just sucked that they chose to end it that way. -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 9:18 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
It jumped when it seemed like Roseanne wanted the show to be more and more outrageous every week so she gradually turned such a brilliant, funny and realistic show into more of a spectacle of what it used to be. Somewhere during Season 7, each episode started to take a turn for the worse. -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 9:14 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
In the episode where the cast parodies Gilligan's Island, Laurie Metcalf played Gilligan himself and sadly was stuck in that role for the duration of the series. -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 6:35 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote

Ok WTF was with Tiny Tim playing Tiptoe thru the Tulips with David on the couch, and then Dan came out and smashed the hell out of it. It jumped big ass time then. -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 4:25 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Roseanne was a brilliant show - as good as sitcoms can get. There are dozens of episodes which are written and acted flawlessly. Just amazing craft. But around not long after Jackie married Fred the show hit the wall. A sudden shift of producers and writers -- not to mention Roseanne's break-up with Tom Arnold -- ended the magic. The seventh season was not as funny or polished as the previous ones. Then, the eighth season was astonishingly unfunny. And the ninth season was such a shift in tone and a betrayal of direction that it was like watching a train wreck. When I watch the reruns these days on TV Land or WE I stop after Jackie gets married. -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 4:23 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
JUMP the shark??? More like Pole Vaulted the shark....especially "which Becky will it be this week", winning the damn lottery, Jackie goes from smart and cute to retarded and goofy, boring Fred, everyone's suddenly gay etc. Basically it JTS when Roseanne started getting her way with the show. -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 4:19 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
OK, not to be homophobic, BUT......First Leon is gay, ok, his character was pretty funny. Then Nancy switches teams and OK...those 2 situations made for some funny lines, but the ultimate jump was when Bev came out. Suddenly she goes from frumpy, conservative, biased house-wife to swinging, beautiful, gorgeous girlfriend, has this great social life, lesbian. And don't get me started on the episode where Bev and her lover invite Leon and Scott over to dinner and they all start dancing like Rockettes. The ultimate jump. That whole last season was a waste, what a shame from a once brilliant show. Oh yeah, turns out in the end, Bev is straight and Jackie the guy-chaser was really gay. OK...........whatever!!!!!!!!!!! -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 4:18 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
I wouldn't say Season 6 is where it officially jumped because there are some great/classic episodes in S6, like A Stash from the Past, Lies My Father Told Me and Don't Ask Don't Tell, just to name a few. Season 6 is an above average season in general. Honestly, Season 7 is when things got a lot less funny and characters seemed to become complete caricatures of themselves. I have no problem with women cutting their hair, but for some reason, as soon as Jackie cut her hair, it was like "BAM, I'm going to act like a cross between Ellen DeGeneres and Barney Fife now!". I personally think the show should have ended at the end of S6, because the show would have went out on a high note. But instead, it went on for 3 more utterly unnecessary seasons, in which Jackie's character suddenly exists only to pop into a room, grimace and say something insanely slapstick, clutch onto Andy for dear life, and go right back out. She and Roseanne didn't even seem close anymore at that point. Another thing I noticed is that, even though I liked David, he began getting more airtime than necessary (more than DARLENE, DJ, JACKIE, etc) and Mark went from being the smooth bad boy/rebel (think "Fonz" from Happy Days) to being dumber than a box of rocks. But the actual shark jump moment that there was absolutely no turning back from was when the hit the lottery. The sharks had been swarming around for awhile before that, but when the Conners were suddenly multimillionaires the shark was jumped, maimed, and suffered a bloody gory death. The lottery episode was completely uncalled for, unrealistic and it also went against everything the show was supposed to be about in the first place. That was the definite point of no return, and the show continued to head into a continuous downward spiral for the rest of it's run. After they won the lottery, the charm of the show was gone, the characters (which had already started to become caricatures of their former selves) were no longer funny, relatable, and the chemistry that they used to have was absent. Everything was suddenly awkward and no longer even felt like "Roseanne". -- Submitted By: () on April 24, 2014, 11:44 pm - (9 votes) - Login to Vote
I think this show successfully transitioned from Becky #1 to Becky #2. But I think the show 'boned the fish' a couple of years later, when the characters became mere caricatures. When Mark became so stupid he couldn't tie his own shoes, and when Jackie became a humorless shrew and a moron. I think it was about a year before the horrific "lottery" season. That whole final season was awful, but the show had already sunk before then. I wish "Roseanne" had been cancelled about halfway through Season 8, when it was clear the show had run out of steam. The beginning of Season 8 had the hilarious "Identical Beckys" episode, but tanked partway into the season. -- Submitted By: (Retroguy2000) on December 30, 2013, 8:37 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
