TV Shows - Different World, A

A Different World is an American television sitcom which aired for six seasons on NBC (from September 24, 1987 until July 9, 1993). It was a spinoff series from The Cosby Show, originally centered on Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) and the life of students at Hillman College, a fictional historically Black college in Virginia. Later seasons of the show focused on other characters, including mathematics whiz Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Southern belle Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy). In reality, Spelman College was the campus primarily seen during the show

Icemouth Terrance wore the ponytail because the rattail was a hot commodity in the early 90s. -- Submitted By: (tvwatcher7) on March 19, 2015, 11:49 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Now, WHO IN THE WORLD would say that this show "boned" from the day one? Lemme guess: whites who felt that the show became too "Afrocentric"..lol ..Well, that just confirms this show for me..lol ..We need to bring such shows BLACK - I mean, BACK..lol -- Submitted By: (Lashid4u) on March 18, 2015, 1:18 pm - (1 votes) - Login to Vote
Talk about beating a dead horse.. the only good thing about the final season was an appearance by Tupac Shakur.. Most of the cast sticks around after graduation and works at Hillman? The filet-o-fish was finally made when Charmaine and Lance (from the Cosby Show) joined the cast in the final season -- Submitted By: (stryker73) on September 19, 2014, 10:16 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
It's a different world, it's a different world, from where you come from. It seemed way to unbelievable that Whitley Gilbert could fall for Dwayne Wayne. She must have been on something. There were many opportunities for the fish to be boned with this one. They found the Underground Railroad at Hillman. Lisa Bonet left and that annoying other girl came along (the one who found the Underground Railroad). Dwayne Wayne lost the flip-up glasses when most of America were buying them from flea market vendors. Dean Cain was a racist in a very special episode. Dwayne Wayne and Whitley went on a honeymoon in LA during the riots. Way too many scenes featured Dwayne and Whitley over the other characters. I'm sorry, but they just weren't that fascinating. Who can forget the new kids in town for this one? -- Submitted By: (tvwatcher7) on September 13, 2014, 7:34 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
"A Different World", towards the end of its run, was so heavy and deep into the Afro-Centrism philosophy that I fully expected Louis Farrakhan, of the Nation of Islam fame, to make a guest appearance on at least one episode and urge all people of color to renounce any ties they had remaining with the Caucasian race. -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 10:22 pm - (-1 votes) - Login to Vote
Season one she's a stuck up southern belle, complete with a low-self-esteem having sidekick. Great character. By the time she hooks up with Dwayne she's a farce. Smoky southern drawl morphs into a corny fake twang. Sidekick (Millie) disappears. Whitley goes from bourgie to brainless. Garbage. Jumped the Shark when Col. Taylor's half-German son showed up. Remember Terrence? Why was he on the show? What did he add? What episode involving Terrence would have been ANY different if he weren't there? And what was with that ponytail? -- Submitted By: (Icemouth) on August 15, 2014, 10:21 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
It boned after season 1 when Whitley's voice changed and she became whiny.. and Kris Kross was in an episode.. double bone -- Submitted By: () on December 24, 2011, 5:13 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I'm re-affirming my opinion on this early 90's trainwreck! Take this and "Life Goes On" and burn the negatives, DVD's VHS etc and remove them from existence- Boned. -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on December 21, 2011, 7:35 am - (-2 votes) - Login to Vote
David Letterman on air called this "The Almost Cosby Show". Fitting -- Submitted By: (John63btf) on December 11, 2011, 10:32 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Why did the characters stick around after their graduation from college? Haven't they had enough of Hillman like the viewers did? -- Submitted By: () on November 9, 2011, 11:49 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I didn't remember the show being this bad until I saw some reruns recently on TVOne. At least the first season was tolerable, but by the time it got to the last season it was really...really...really bad. I mean we're talking about some of the worst acting I've ever seen. -- Submitted By: (Dusk) on March 4, 2011, 12:58 pm - (-2 votes) - Login to Vote
The quality of the show declined in season five, at least for me, because the writers were all hell-bent about centering the show around Dwayne and Whitley's engagement/lack thereof. The episodes that were not fluff or about Dwayne/Whitley dealt with serious issues that were not treated with the respect they should have been. The fluffy episodes were just plain silly. -- Submitted By: (marchosias) on October 30, 2010, 9:35 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
I agree that the show actually improved when the sleepwalking Denise left (and even before she was gone, she had become a de facto background extra on what was supposed to be her OWN show). However; the last year would have been better simply not done. -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on September 15, 2010, 4:38 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
This is one of the very few shows that actually got better after the main character left. I never was a huge fan of it, but Denise was probably my least favorite character on the Cosby Show and the one I thought least deserved her own show. The show hasn't aged well at all (but the Cosby Show really hasn't either) and it got really bad once the main characters got hitched, ruining any sexual tension. -- Submitted By: (kingbk) on September 8, 2010, 5:58 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Cute show...I like it even minus Denise. I loved Whitley. -- Submitted By: (LauDor08) on November 10, 2009, 1:23 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
This a cute one, but it not on to long. I only watch it sometime. -- Submitted By: (shanequia) on August 24, 2009, 1:15 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
This show looks so dated now, it is really a different world. And hey Lisa Bonet rocks for one reason, she may be boring, but she isnt afraid to do a nude scene in a film, unlike Jessica Alba, so lets give her props for that at least.... -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on June 20, 2009, 7:37 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
It seems hard to believe now, but this started out as a spinoff for Denise from "The Cosby Show". However; Denise proved to be so boring that she wound up being a virtual extra on her own show before the first season was over- and was frankly barely missed when the show came back the next season! -- Submitted By: (Pelirojo) on June 20, 2009, 6:29 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
Im on the fence with late 80's early 90's cool or not cool, it just depends on what it is, but we can all agree A DIFFERENT WORLD was lame.... -- Submitted By: (Chubby Rain) on June 20, 2009, 4:47 am - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
HEY!!! The early 90s were NOT lame!!! The late 80s, yes. This decade, definitely. But the early 90s not only rocked, they may well be the very last period of pop culture to ever do so now that Big Brother--I mean big business--has completely ruined the "entertainment" industry. -- Submitted By: (DolFan316) on June 19, 2009, 7:41 pm - (0 votes) - Login to Vote
